Taste of St. Louis - Volunteers Needed!

This summer was great for LiveFeed, what with all the people who donated and helped us at both PointFests, The LOT, Live on the Levee, Fair St. Louis, and our first annual garage sale. But we're not quite finished yet.

We need to make one last, big push this weekend to get us through the winter months, and we need your help at Taste of St. Louis this weekend.

It's easy. We just need folks to hang out in the LiveFeed tent, collect donations, and spread the word about how LiveFeed's fighting childhood hunger in St. Louis.

What better time to think about those who are going without, when our city's best food can be found at one place (Soldier's Memorial downtown, in case you didn't know.) Even with news that the hardest punch of the recession has possibly passed, that doesn't mean everything's a-ok.

If you can volunteer your time, drop a line to tom@livefeed.org and pick a shift. Five hours of work will do us a world of good. And it'll give you a chance to take advantage of the fun at Taste of St. Louis. Not only the good chow, but the great music.

One of LiveFeed's biggest local supporters, Illphonics, plays Friday night on the main stage at 7:45 p.m during the finals of Bud Light's Tasty Band Competition. Have you seen them live? If not, here's what you're missing:

Come support them! Then hang around for some '90s nostalgia with Presidents of the United States of America. You remember Peaches, right?

LiveFeed Garage Sale!

Got a bunch of stuff you don't need? Don't we all. I know my family's got boxes of clothes, toys, CDs, books, and household stuff that make it hard to park in our garage. I don't know where this stuff comes from; I think criminals keep breaking into my house and leaving their junk when I'm not here.

Got the same problem? Donate your stuff to LiveFeed! We're having a garage sale on Saturday, August 1st.

If you'd like to add your junk to the sale, please email hillary@livefeed.org. She'll send you a message with info on how to get your stuff to us during the collection week (July 25th - August 1st) and a form to declare what you're donating. That's important stuff, because you can write off the donated items on your 2009 taxes. Believe me, that's a lot easier than hosting your own sale, and all the money will help LiveFeed aide the 135,000 kids in the St. Louis area who face hunger every single day.

LiveFeed was awarded a beverage booth at this year's Fair St. Louis--an honor given to only a few St. Louis non-profits. It's a great chance to raise a lot of money and to share our message with a larger audience.

The only problem? WE DON'T HAVE ENOUGH VOLUNTEERS!!

That's why we're counting on you, our loyal LiveFeed supporters, to help us out!

We need as many people as possible on Saturday from 5:30 pm-midnight. You can work the whole shift or a half, from 5:30-9 or 9-12.

Please consider coming out and bringing a friend or two with you!

You've helped out in the past and we are really hoping you can come through now.

PS: Of course anything you can do to help us spread the word would be great!

Missouri Childhood Hunger in the National Spotlight

...and it's not good.

Missouri State Representative Cynthia Davis from St. Charles made some comments about the perks of childhood hunger in her June newsletter that have caught the attention of national media outlets. MSNBC's on it. So's the Kansas City Star. And Fox.

Now, I know my reaction to this story. It's not pretty. I don't want to go on a partisan rampage here, though. That doesn't put food in anyone's mouth. So I'm going to approach it like this:

If you agree with Davis, you need to be a part of the non-government programs that's helping the one in five Missouri children facing hunger. LiveFeed's one of those programs and we need volunteers! Sign up! Tell Rep. Davis you agree with her and encourage her to join LiveFeed in helping the kids in her district. Email her at Cynthia.Davis@house.mo.gov. Better yet, give her a call at 573-751-9768.

Disagree with Davis? Worried that our tax dollars aren't doing enough to help the one in five Missouri children facing hunger? Then help a grassroots program that is helping those kids. Like LiveFeed! And we need volunteers! Sign up! Tell Rep. Davis you disagree with her and encourage her to join LiveFeed in helping the kids in her district. Email her at Cynthia.Davis@house.mo.gov. How about spending your Sundays catching local bands with the new Live on the Loop concert series at Racanelli's Cucina? Steve Ewing kicks it off this Sunday. Will Rep. Davis be there? I hope so. We need as many people paying that $5 cover charge to help the kids who are too young to start slinging fast food burgers.

I just signed up to work the booth during Sonic Youth, which means I get to help feed St. Louis kids and see one of my favorite bands without fighting the crowds (as much). Want a preview?

Volunteering for St. Louis' great free concerts will give you the opportunity to volunteer for LiveFeed at most of this summer's shows at Verizon Amphitheater.

Can't take the heat of volunteering? Then head to our Facebook page, where we're trying to raise $10,000 to fight summer hunger. Amy Graham, our director (and candidate for Alive Magazine's Sexy and Successful!) has this message:

Kids are off of school, but while they are on vacation hunger is on the rise. Many kids who are dependent on the school breakfast and lunch programs go without during the summer months. If everyone who has joined this cause donated just $20 then we would easily reach our goal. Another option is to recruit more people to the cause and get them to donate $10, $5. It is amazing what a difference we can all make if we work together.

So let's get to work!

Red Pill Records presents a songwriters-in-the-round performance with Kevin Bilchik, R. Scott Bryan, Javier Mendoza, and Amy Petty. Tickets are $10, and the show starts at 7:30 pm.

On June 25th, come to Atomic Cowboy for San Fransisco's DJ Deadlover's St. Louis debut with local hip-hop from The Illphonics. Cover's $5 with proceeds benefiting LiveFeed.

Emerging Artists = Emerging Hope

The bad news: Feeding America released the latest figures on food insecurity and it's not good in Missouri. Twenty percent of Missouri's kids are living with food insecurity. Most of these kids are under the age of five, so they don't benefit from school breakfast and lunch programs.

The good news: LiveFeed's helping, with the help of so many of you! At our first Rock n' Romp at The Royale on April 26th, parents and kids managed to halfway fill a 33-gallon barrel with canned food items in a mere two hours.

This weekend, we have another opportunity for you to help while catching some great live music. ALIVE Magazine's St. Louis Emerging Artist Music Festival will donate a portion of their ticket sales to LiveFeed. Come down to Washington Avenue between 19th and 20th Streets from 3-8 PM this Saturday and catch the bands ALIVE readers voted into the show. Tickets are $5 in advance and $10 at the show.

Kids Fighting Hunger

This week a bunch of kids in my hometown of Belleville, Illinois collected enough food pantry donatables to fill 10 school buses. That's over 20,000 items that will directly benefit food insecure families in my community.

For the Drive Away Hunger program, students collected and donated non-perishable food items. Ten-year-old Austin Firestone collected over 100 bags of groceries by sending letters to his neighbors.

Food pantries such as Belleville's Community Interfaith Food Pantry are currently assisting an average of 20 new families a week. Their director, Jerry Messick, told the Belleville News-Democrat: "Without this food, we couldn't keep the doors open."

Not bad for a bunch of kids!

LiveFeed has another way kids all over the St. Louis metro area. I'm extremely partial to this, because it's the first show I've ever organized.

Sunday, April 26th, come to The Royale (3132 S. Kingshighway) from 3-5 PM for the first-ever St. Louis Rock n' Romp! Royale owner Steven Smith has graciously given us the run of their courtyard, where we'll be hosting two locals bands - Harlot Bride and Andy Rhea and His Band - in a kid-friendly environment. Admission is one non-perishable food item, which goes directly to LiveFeed and will be distributed within St. Louis.

Bring the kids and they'll have a great time experiencing live music while helping their community. And you'll get to enjoy some great tunes, too, along with the company of like-minded parents and the food and libations The Royale offers. They've got some really yummy specials this weekend.

Last Weekend for a Free Kemper Concert!

Did you make it to any of the free concerts this spring at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum? This Friday night is your last chance this season, and I highly recommend you check it out. I went last weekend with my family and a friend to catch The 75s and Left Arm. With cooperative weather, the bands play outside on a patio with sculptures and seating. Lots of room to move, or sit back and enjoy the music.

Schlafly and O'Fallon Brewery both have free beers available to those of age, with fizzy French soda and snacks for everyone.

This Friday at 6 PM, catch Brotha'D and the Woo-Daddies. It's free. There's parking next to the museum. What could be an easier a more fun way to start your weekend?

If you could bring a few bucks to donate to the museum, or a jar of peanut butter for LiveFeed, you'll have fun and do some good for two great causes.

The UMSL Hunger Experiment

Students at the University of Missouri - St. Louis' Newman Center had the chance to experience the disproportion of the haves and have-nots in an experiment last Thursday. Read more about how students reacted to a small-scale illustration of living in dire poverty versus high income. While their experiment focuses on worldwide hunger, it touched on the universal feeling of being lesser-than that comes with being inadequately nourished, regardless of if they're living in Africa or St. Louis.

Want to help some locals who know that feeling all too well because hunger is their reality? Check out LiveFeed's shows this week.

In the mood for something different? How about belly dancing in Clayton? Aalim Dance of St.Louis presents AZIZA in Concert with performers from St.Louis and the midwest region. They'll be at the Sheraton Clayton Plaza Hotel (7730 Bonhomme in downtown Clayton) all weekend. The main performance is Saturday night, but you can get the low-down on how to shimmy at workshops throughout the weekend. Check the Aalim Dance of St. Louis website for pricing. If you've never had the thrill of sitting by a dancer with a sword balanced on her head, you need to attend this event!

It's Time to See Hunger

Yesterday, the Cleveland Plain-Dealer ran an editorial by Phillip Morris about seeing hunger that's a must-read for everyone.

I'm not talking about people that we are emotionally conditioned to ignore: The chronically homeless, vagrants who aggressively panhandle and the mentally ill who refuse help. Those folks know how to forage for food.

I'm talking about children. I'm talking about senior citizens. I'm talking about out-of-work and out-of-resources young families, who live just down the street. I'm talking about people who have lost jobs and are in the process of losing homes, cars -- and hope.

We must all pitch in.

Here's how you can help in St. Louis.

Pay a visit to Off Broadway (3509 Lemp Avenue, in the Cherokee Lemp District), where $1 from each ticket benefits LiveFeed.

LiveFeed's Got Some Great Pals

First and foremost, thank you to everyone who voted and spread the word about LiveFeed competing for $10,000 in Advanta's Ideablob February contest. We won't know for two weeks who won. We do know this: at the last minute on Saturday night, when LiveFeed was 12 votes out of first place, lots of peopole rallied to vote for us. Amazing!

Second, our good friends at Off Broadway are really stepping up for LiveFeed. They're donating $1 from each ticket to LiveFeed! Monday nights, during their free PBR Music Series, you can donate $5 to LiveFeed, enjoy $1 cans of PBR, and catch some great live music. Tonight, Person X takes the stage at 10 PM.

Down to the Wire with the Red Rocker

This is it, guys. We've got just over 30 hours to win this thing! We're just 200 votes behind, so it's really important that you vote for LiveFeed and spread the word ASAP!

Our dear friend Julie of Sungazing Photography has put another plea for votes on Flickr. Take a look, leave a comment, select it as a favorite, and help spread the word through the Flickr community.

Another great pal of ours, Juliet, enlisted the help of some feline minions to urge votes ... and toasted rav delivery.

We've been surrounded by reminders in the news today on just how urgent LiveFeed's mission of providing aid to hungry kids in St. Louis really is. Thursday night, Fox 2 reported how Circle of Concern's food pantry has taken a huge hit due to increased demand for their services and a decrease in donations due to the recession. Not only is Circle of Concern one of the largest hunger relief pantries in the St. Louis area, it's also a partner agency of Operation Food Search. LiveFeed provides funds and food donations to Operation Food Search.

In other words, by supporting LiveFeed, you support Operation Food Search, who in turn keep pantries like Circle of Concern stocked.

Also on Thursday, President Obama proposed to Congress a plan to end childhood hunger by 201 5. Swell, right? Of course! But what do we do to get through the six years between now and then? It's organizations like LiveFeed that are going to bridge the gap.

Finally, St. Louis' favorite adopted son, Sammy Hagar, is in town today for the opening of his new restaurant at Harrah's Casino. What does this have to do with hungry kids in St. Louis? Hagar's long been a champion of helping hungry kids in St. Louis. His two sold-out performances at The Pageant last fall benefited one of our favorite groups, Blessings in a Backpack. BiaB provides backpacks filled with food to keep kids nourished through the weekend, when free school lunchs and breakfasts aren't available. Not only did the two shows earn a lot of money for BiaB, but Hagar himself handed out backpacks to kids who needed them.

Which brings us to today, and the grand opening of Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill. Sammy's in town for the opening, when he could be sitting on a beach in Cabo. Do you know the difference in temperatures between St. Louis and Cabo today? It's 50 degrees warmer in Cabo and yet, he's here. Why? So he can make a buck? Nope. 100% of the profits from Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill goes directly to St. Louis charities through The Hagar Family Fund. Not just today, but every day.

If he's doing that much to help the people of St. Louis, sure you can take a few minutes out of your busy web-surfing schedule and vote for LiveFeed. Then treat yourself to a little vintage Sammy and perhaps a tequila shooter. It's almost 5:00, after all.

The Mosaic Whispers A Cappella Barely Legal show happens in Graham Chapel on the Wash U campus at 7:30. Tickets are $7, $5 for students. Free for volunteers! Get a sample of them performing a little Ben Folds sans instruments.

Friday night's your last chance to catch Headmess, the alter ego of Washington University's Dean of Students, Henry Biggs. He's performing his final show at 8:00 in the 560 Building on WU's campus. Tickets are $12 for students, $18 for WU faculty and staff, and $26 for everyone else. Don't miss this final opportunity to see the show that captured Anderson Cooper's attention.

We also need volunteers to spread LiveFeed's message at the opening of the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum's concert series. St. Louis' favorite alt-country band, Theodore, opens the free series at 6:00 Friday night. The museum is located at near Skinker and Forsyth, west of Forest Park on Wash. U's campus.

With $10,000, LiveFeed can feed over 2,500 kids that otherwise wouldn't have enough to eat. We are on the brink of winning $10,000 but need your help!

That's right - it's time for Ideablob's February finals, and LiveFeed needs your vote to win a $10,000 grant! We also need for you to spread the word to all of your friends, family, and anyone you know who cares about eradicating childhood hunger in St. Louis. This is so easy to do. Voting takes a minute. If you voted in the preliminaries two weeks ago, you don't even have to register at Ideablob. So much easier than what some teens in Belleville did last week to raise hunger awareness. Nineteen kids voluntarily fasted for 30 hours while serving a fundraising chicken and dumpling dinner and prepping food baskets for Food Share.

This week's a short n' busy one for LiveFeed with some really unique show opportunities. We've got two biggies planned for this week. So big they defy chronological order!

Thursday night, LiveFeed, in conjunction with KDHX, finally ventures to my turf - the Metro East - for a big show at Pop's (1403 Mississippi Avenue in Sauget, Illinois). Sine Nomine headlines with openers Commichung and Colors From a Cannon. Cover's $7 ($2 surcharge for minors), and it's all being donated to LiveFeed. Doors open at 8. Meanwhile, F5 Records celebrates their 10th anniversary at The Gramophone with DJ Crucial, DJ Needles, Earthworms, Jia Davis, Nato Caliph, and Black Spade. The celebration starts at 10. Cover's $5.

On To the Finals! And a Whole Lotta Funk for V-Day!

First and foremost, thanks for all votes and word of mouth you folks gave LiveFeed in our bid to make it into Ideablob's finals for $10,000! We placed second in the first round, which was enough to get us into the finals. The next round of voting begins on February 22. Your participation is even more important in this next round, so we'll be sweetening the deal with free music. Stay tuned for details and prepare to bombard everyone you know to vote vote vote!

If you happened to visit cnn.com Monday afternoon, for a brief time our country's hunger situation took the front page. There was a look at the changing face of food stamps, debunking the myths that people who receive federal food assistance are mooches looking for a handout. Does this sound like someone milking the system?

Few are more hopeful the measure will pass than Crystal Sears, a 30-year-old mother in Germantown, Pennsylvania, who said she has been on food stamps for more than three years.
Sears said she sometimes skips meals so her three children can eat. Even with federal assistance, she said, she sometimes has to make a meal for herself out of crackers or food scraps.

In Sears' situation, she's out of work to care for her children who all suffer from medical conditions. Read the article and learn how Sears is forced to choose between food for her family and health care for her children.

Food stamps, or the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP as it's now called, isn't enough to provide healthy meals for families.

Sears stretches her food budget by buying cheap and sometimes fatty meals. She said she doesn't like doing that but can't avoid it. With food prices high, she said, grocery shopping is stressful.
"We get like the mac and cheese, which is dehydrated cheese -- basically food that's no good for you health wise," she said. "Everything is high in sodium and trans fats ... and that's all we basically can afford. There's not enough assistance to eat healthy and maintain a healthy weight."

This is why food banks are so important. With government assistance being limited for food insecure families, neighborhood food pantries stocked by food banks like Food Outreach can make the difference for families who have to choose between health care and food, or where a parent has to go hungry so her children may eat. Snow Days Don't Stop Childhood Hunger

As the winter storm has worked its way towards St. Louis, I've talked to a lot of friends - teachers, students, and parents who don't feel like braving the weather to get the kids to school tomorrow - who are hoping/wishing/praying/doing ritualistic dances in their yards in hopes of summoning a snow day.

I can't say I blame them. My daughter's almost five, and she's convinced that her quality of life decreases with each day that passes without the opportunity to whip a snowball at me. While I can't say that I like being hit with snowballs - she fights dirty and packs them with ice - I'd love nothing more than to ignore the alarm tomorrow, sleep in, get my butt kicked around the backyard by my little snow monster, then curl up by the fireplace with hot cocoa. That's what snow days are all about, right?

Not for everyone. For plenty of parents and children, a snow day means uncertainty and fear. Working parents who rely on school for child care are left to scramble for a sitter. All too often, there's no money to pay for snow day childcare, which means lost income and job insecurity.

For a lot of kids, a snow day might mean a day of hunger. Of the 29 million kids who eat from the federally-funded school lunch program, 17.4 million of them are in free or reduced-price lunch programs. That number's increased by over half a million in the last year. Of the kids eating free or reduced-price lunches, 44% of them also rely on their schools for reduced-price or free breakfast. So, what happens to these kids on snow days? How many of them can count on having those two extra meals at home? What kind of financial burden does this put on their families?

It's National Day of Service!

In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, we're asked to make it "a day on, not a day off" for National Day of Service. While LiveFeed doesn't have any shows on today's schedule, there are still lots of opportunities to help St. Louis' hungry citizens.

University of Missouri - St. Louis hosts their first annual MLK Day Challenge, with volunteer opportunities on 13 service projects.

You can help the Harvey Kornblum Jewish Food Pantry sort donations at their 10950 Schuetz Rd. facility. Call Kelly Mueller at 314-812-9386 if you want to help.

Gateway Homeless Services also needs help cleaning and organizing their food distribution warehouse at 3965 Park Ave.

The Caronddlet Community Betterment Federation is hosting a food drive, prayer service and march from 9:30 A.M. - 12:30 P.M. Make donations at CSJ Motherhouse, 6400 Minnesota Ave.

The Missouri Public Interest Research Group Student Chapter of Meramec Community College is holding a food and toiletries drive to stock local shelters with essentials. They're collecting items at the student union, starting at noon.

Communication Workers of America Local 6300 will collect food at all St. Louis-area AT&T locations for distribution to local food banks.

Baby, It's Cold Outside!

This week? Frigid. But do you know where it gets nice and toasty? Inside a club, of course!

With the dire cold in the forecast, it's more important than ever for us to take care of each other. Last month, Heat-Up St. Louis reported that Laclede Gas shut-offs for bill non-payments have increased by 18% this year. In the Metro East, Ameren IE reports a 12% increase in shut-offs.

In other words, more people are going without the necessities right now than ever before. That includes food, too. Last month the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported a 15% increase in first-time food pantry patrons.

Cold and hunger go hand-in-hand. Brave the former this week to battle the latter by checking out some of LiveFeed's shows this week.

Tuesday, warm up with Utter Chaos' monthly gig at The Gramaphone (4243 Manchester Avenue in The Grove). Nothing like some '50s - inspired jazz from these graduates of SIUE's jazz department to beat the chill. If you like the Gerry Mulligan Quartet, don't miss Utter Chaos at 9 PM tonight. The show's free, and the bar will have $5 glasses of wine.

Wednesday, bundle up and head to Peppertini's Piano Bar and Grill for some $5 soup du jour and Leslie Sanazaro on piano from 7-10 PM. Pepprtini's is located at 79 Forum Shopping Center in Chesterfield - slightly north of Olive and west of 141. Hot and Cold, indeed.

If you'd rather warm your cockles under the spotlight, come to The Gramophone's (4243 Manchester Avenue in The Grove) weekly open mic night, hosted by Tommy Halloran of The Bottom's Up Blues Gang and sponsored by PBR (drafts are only $1.50!). Doors open at 8 and music starts at 9, but get there early to secure your spot. Three songs or fifteen minutes on stage should take off the chill.

Thursday night means Innerman Productions Presents Mic of Knowledge at Queen of Sheba (6665 Olive Blvd., University City). Sister TARJI hosts an evening of poets, musicians, drummers, and dancers at the Ethiopian eatery. Performances start at 7:30, and the cover's $5.

If you missed Leslie Sarazaro on Wednesday, catch her and her friends at The Venice Cafe (1903 Pestalozzi in South City) on Thursday at 9 PM for $3.

The Gramophone will host Jason Vargas and Jon Coriell of Rev. Whiskey Richard at 10 PM. Cover's $5. There's scant info about what Jason and Jon will be doing, but I hope it's something like this.

Leslie Sanazaro will make her third LiveFeed appearence of the week on Friday at Schlafly Bottleworks (7260 Southwest Avenue, Maplewood). Her free performance starts at 8:30.

If you'd rather kick start your weekend with some guitar rock, Japanese Bat Bomb (formerly Cat, Jump!) will be at The Gramophone Friday at 10. Cover's $5.

Finally, Saturday night brings Turn it Up! Part 4 featuring DJs Needles, Reminise and Enoch is Real to The Gramophone. $5 gets you in the door at 10 PM for hip hop grooves. If that doesn't thaw you out, you have a hypothermia problem.

In Case You Missed It: Last Bash at Off Broadway, 1/7/09

Last Wednesday Off Broadway hosted Last Bash - one last winter break night of music before returning to school. Lots of folks braved the cold and flurries to have some fun and help LiveFeed raise some cash to feed St. Louis' hungry kids. One dollar of the cover charge went to LiveFeed. We also had a table where you could score the LiveFeed's Sound Bites CD for $5. Raising Kane donated some t-shirts to the cause, and lots of people dropped cash into our coffers. Thanks so much! All of that money will help keep our neighbors fed.

LOGOS opened the night with the guitar-heavy retro rock. Lead singer and guitarist Cullen O'Donnell showed far more charisma and guitar chops than many musicians twice his age. Local blogger Yeags wrote about O'Connell's prowess almost a year ago, and it seems the kid hasn't slowed down. With his wah-wah pedals and double-neck guitar, O'Connell evoked his classic rock and garage influences, but it was his energy and interplay with bassist Zach Czajkowski that made for a tight, entertaining set.

After LOGOS, the audience (including Beatle Bob) took to the floor for the melodic metal of Raising Kane. Perched on the speakers, lit from below, and headbanging away, these guys didn't take themselves too seriously while employing every spooky metal trick in the book. They could have come off as a joke, but fact is, their sharp playing skills and blending of classic metal speed with modern songwriting created a set that even grew on the non-metalheads in the crowd.

The evening ended with a lush, stripped-down set from Walk Sophie. Percussionist/Spanish guitarist/and background vocalist Noah Mitchell missed the show due to school commitments, making Walk Sophie's set heavy with folk influences. Lead singer/guitarist Kevin Grosch, keyboardist/vocalist Dan Warner, and violinist Jackson Ramsey carried on with graceful, beautiful melodies, sweet vocals, and elegant instrumentation. On their recordings, Walk Sophie's creative uses of percussion sometimes dominate, so it was interesting to hear a different take on their lyric-driven songs.

Saturday: iFest and Full Moon Fest

LiveFeed's Battling for St. Louis' Hungry

It has been non-stop battling for LiveFeed the last couple weeks. We've seen some bands pit against each other, competing for a coveted spot at some of this summer's biggest live shows in St. Louis. The music has been impressive, and the competition's ferocity has, so far, given LiveFeed a substantial increase in attention and support for our cause. We thank iChannel and Loyal Family for inviting us into these battles to take donations and, in many cases, a portion of the door price, and promote our cause to hundreds of people and musicians alike.

Friday the 25th at the Old Rock House and Saturday the 26th at Off Broadway are our next dates for the SoCo Tasty Band Competition. The bands in the past have surprised us with their music, and the winners from the first two nights were Illphonics and Madahoochi, respectively. This weekend, we anticipate, should involve another 7 great bands, and two winners (based on a vote by the fans in attendance at the show) will move on to the Pageant on September 6th.

Saturday the 26th, our biggest night of the week, is also the night of the finals for iChannel's Battle of the Bands for iFest. This night will include all winners from the past nights' competition, and these bands have absolutely rocked the house down at Cruisin' Rte. 66 and The Pit thus far. Come check out the finals and watch and vote, as the fans determine two winners for iFest!

The Tasty Band Competition - Night One

The first night of the 5-part battle came down to the wire between Team Relevance and Illphonics. All groups put on a very entertaining show, and got everyone pretty pumped to be at the Gramophone. However, there would be only one qualifying group to proceed to play at the finals. By two and a half votes, Illphonics took the first spot given for the concert at The Pageant.

Congrats to all groups involved. You have served the community and the fans well! We really enjoyed the show and appreciate the donations.

After such a close, exciting show last Saturday night, we are really looking forward to next Saturday at Lucas School House. It looks to be another kick-ass line-up of bands, and the venue is spectacular. Come check out Roly Poly, Youth & Roots and Via Dove July 19th. If you missed last Saturday, you won't want to let it happen again because everyone is getting fired up about this competition, and the talent is remarkable.

Teri Winning, Volunteer Coordinator extraordinaire

I’m struck again and again by the generosity of people. Teri Winning emailed me last November. We had coffee and she asked what she could do to support LiveFeed. I was taken aback by her willingness to do whatever we needed. After several conversations, she took on being our volunteer coordinator. This was a position that she didn’t have much experience in so Teri sought out training to develop the necessary skills. She created a structure soon after and began managing the offers we got for volunteer help. Honestly, it never occurred to me that LiveFeed might have a volunteer coordinator in its first year and Teri’s enthusiasm and tenacity at taking on the position was incredibly inspiring. Teri provided a great service for LiveFeed in her time with us and we, I, will be forever grateful for her contribution.

There are so many who have made a critical difference to the creation and development of LiveFeed. I hope with time we will be able to fully appreciate and honor each of them. I also hope that everyone who has contributed will find themselves honored each time we are able to publicly appreciate one of our supporters.

Javier Mendoza's influence

The first time I saw Javier Mendoza play was at Brandt’s in the loop. I’d heard of him, but as a friend of mine and I sat down to dinner, he started playing half dozen paces from our table. Before our food found its way to our table, we found ourselves on our feet, dancing. It was one of my favorite nights of dancing, though we were the only two doing so.

After dinner I purchased several of Javier’s CDs and over the next week, listened to them incessantly. I sought Javier ought the next week and enjoyed another great performance. Afterwards I asked Javier if I could take him to lunch and talk to him about a vision I had for feeding children in St. Louis. He agreed and we had lunch the following week.

As we savored raviolis at Raconellis, I told Javier about my dream for creating LiveFeed. He was the first musician I’d talked to about it in St. Louis and his reaction strengthened my commitment to building the organization. He said that he’d been thinking of taking a two year sabbatical to do service work to satisfy his commitment to making a difference. Javier has sense told me that supporting LiveFeed gives him a way to satisfy that commitment while doing what he loves, creating great music. He told me that he now finishes each show with the sense that what he is doing is making a meaningful difference.

That is what LiveFeed is about. We are creating ways for people to make a meaningful, lasting difference for the less fortunate in their community, not by sacrifice, but by slightly altering what they are already doing. We have seen that it is possible to support those in need while having a great time and we are clear that together, we can continue to alter the way our society views service to others. We can assuage apathy, we can circumvent cynicism, and we can care our cultures children.

It’s been a year since Javier and I first met. Tonight I was listening to one of his CDs on my iPod and found myself profoundly moved by what we’ve accomplished in the last year. None of what we have accomplished would have happened if it weren’t for faith and support of people like Javier. I am deeply grateful.

Cans film Fest

Saturday afternoon at Queeny Park LiveFeed held our largest event thus
far. When the heat of the day was at its peak the crowd arrived on the
park grounds to donate thousands of pounds of food. We approximate
that up to 5000 people were in attendance at our Cans Film Festival
where 3 bands performed, and a film featuring the Three Stooges was
screened at 9 o'clock.

Loud Mouth Angel, Big Red Audio, and Walk Sophie performed
entertaining sets and brought energy to the scene. Our partners for
this event, KHITS, 97.1 FM Talk, and CW11 were vital to our success,
and their commitment to our cause was inspiring to us and to our
supporters.

The people of St. Louis contributed so generously that a remarkable
amount of local hungry people will be provided with meals. The
ultimate outcome of the Cans Film Festival was the equivalent of an
impressive 12,000-15,000 pounds of food. Our thanks goes out to
everyone in attendance, and to those people who worked to make this
event happen. This was a touching experience, and a chance for the
more affluent members of our community to show their dedication to
helping those in need.

Bloggin' baby!

LiveFeed is jammin'! You wouldn't know it looking at our blog, but we're about to change that. We recently realized that we have this great tool for letting our friends, fans and supporters know about all the great things going on with LiveFeed and we've completely neglected it. So here's our plan. Rather than back-dating posts to correspond with events, triumphs, failures and anything else we think to write about, we'll just start posting everyday. If something cool happened today, we'll tell you. If we're doing something fun tomorrow, we'll let you know. And, whenever we think of something that we want to share that we haven't yet, we'll tell you about that.

Watch for posts from Chloe King, our power-house, 9 year-old volunteer, from Aaron K., our special events coordinator, and the rest of the LiveFeed team.

By the way, we won the SEIC!!! We won a $30,000 grant from the Lutheran Foundation and a $5,000 grant from RubinBrown. We thank both of them, Wash U and all of the people and sponsors that made the Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition possible. We don't know how things would be going if it weren't for all of the support we've gotten. Thank you all!

SEIC Final

We have our final presentation for the Wash U SEIC (social entrepreneurship and innovation competition) this Thursday. We're battling it out with 6 other social ventures for a $35k grand prize. Given that the executive staff of LiveFeed is currently eating Ramen noodles and couch surfing, we're intent on winning. Okay, it's not that bad, but there is a lot of good we plan to do in the next few months and having funding will make a huge difference. After the first round we were in 11th place. Going into the final round, we are in first place. We'll find out the result at a small awards dinner on April 17th. We'll let you know how it goes. Wish us luck ; )

Sustainablility Plan

After a very long week, we just submitted the LiveFeed sustainability plan for the Wash U Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation Competition. We owe Amy a special thanks for not only bringing unprecedented graphic skill, creating the most gorgeous sustainability plan to ever be submitted to this competition, but also for putting in a hundred hours of work in the last week making sure that this thing got done (and done splendidly)!

LiveFeed has Staff!!

Moving ahead full force LiveFeed now has two full time staff members!! Tom and myself are now fully devoted to LiveFeed, for what seems like 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

Tom made the decision in early January to resign as the President of True Edge Consulting to take on the role of Executive Director of LiveFeed.

We are both excited and committed to this organization and cannot wait to see how much we grow over the next few months.

We would like to thank everyone that has been a part of this journey and been a force in chaging our community for the better.

Dirty Santa?? Oh Yeah!! LiveFeed Share the Sprit

Did you get you picture with Santa? Or for that matter his naughty helper? If not then you missed the first annual LiveFeed Holiday party. Food, Fun, Music and well a little bit of naughty were to be had at Jim Edmond’s club F15teen, downtown.

For a mere $25, guests were treated to an array of treats. Access to the club was one, but they were also were fed by the talented Executive Chef Tim McLaughlin. Both the space and food were generously donated by the team at F15teen. F15teen is located at 1900 Locust Avenue For more information, please visit www.15stl.com or call 314-588-8899.

Guests were also entered in a raffle that included gift certificates to local restaurants, Javier Mendoza CDs, Share the Spirit candle set, and a bike donated by Mike Weiss and Big Shark Bicycle. Big Shark is located in the University City Loop, one block East of Skinker.

The highlight of treats was most definitely the chance to get your photo taken with Santa or his helper. Guests took turns sitting on his lap or having her sit on theirs. Thanks to the Vintage Haberdashery for providing the Santa costume.

The evening was made compete with the talented DJ Justin LaRoc, who added non-stop funk and beats to an evening that will be remembered by all who came along.

Thanks to all that came out. Your support helped us raise enough to feed over 2,000 people. We hope to see all of you next years party.

LiveFeed Rocks The House

New Non-Profit Organization dedicated to feeding the local hungry holds inaugural event.

Well-known St. Louis musical artist. Popular new venue. A crowd ready to rock and roll. A Saturday night. When you find yourself in the presence of all these elements, chances are good for a fun evening. But what if it were more? What if your night out actually affected the local community? What if you, in pursuit of weekend happiness, stumbled upon something greater?

I stumbled upon something greater six months ago. LiveFeed, a simple idea built on a simple concept. People are hungry. Resources are plentiful but allocation of those resources uneven. As a result, many people live hungry every single day. No extra helpings. No afternoon snacks. No choice. Of course, many organizations exist to help alleviate the hunger. Operation Food Search, a local food bank, distributes over 1 million pounds of perishable and non-perishable food and household items, every month, free of charge, to food pantries and soup kitchens who offer emergency hunger-relief. Much of this food comes from the generous support of local individuals and corporations through personal donations and community food drives.

Unfortunately, the size and frequency of donations can be unpredictable, and at times during the year, donations drop significantly. LiveFeed was created to attack this part of the problem head on. Their goal is to sustain local food pantries by supplying a consistent, reliable inflow of food and non-perishable items to the organizations that are combating hunger every day. How will they do it? Concerts. Music. Fun. And most importantly, you—the fans.

So let me go back to the beginning: Well-known St. Louis musical artist. Popular new venue. A crowd ready to rock and roll. A Saturday night. Sounds like the making of a good night on the town, right? Now let me be a bit more detailed: Javier Mendoza and his band. The Old Rock House. A crowd of socially minded, music-loving, St. Louisans. Saturday, November 3rd. Something greater? Absolutely—specifically, the inaugural LiveFeed event. The coming out party, if you will. It’s nice to meet you.

The night was casual—like many of my Saturday nights, and I’m sure, many of yours. What made it different was subtle yet huge (a bit oxymoronic, but true). I paid my cover, received my wristband, walked through the door, and grabbed a table as near the stage as possible. To my left, a small table adorned with the LiveFeed logo, selling Javier’s CDs and providing information to interested parties. At the front of the house, Javier and his band, on stage, churning out tune after tune. All around me, people talking about this and that and the other—and LiveFeed. “Cool idea,” said one. Cool, indeed. And easy. One dollar from every ticket that night went directly to LiveFeed, which goes directly to feeding the hungry. That subtly huge difference? My night out fed people desperate for something to eat.

A particularly poignant moment came during Javier’s performance of “Night in Cusco”—the song that Javier, as the founding artist, has touchingly dedicated to LiveFeed and its efforts. During the song, behind Javier and his band, a video ran. Simple in composition, powerful in message, the images shown in rapid succession—our neighbors, our community, our friends—hungry and reliant on the food that is funneled through organizations like Operation Food Search on a daily basis. One-hundred thousand strong—they are St. Louis’s hungry.

Saturday night, the first of many LiveFeed events, was for them.

This evening we presented to the Hatchery, a b-school class where students participate with real world business projects. Randy, Brad and Adam took on working with LiveFeed for the semester. We are thrilled to be working with these 3. Each of them brings a fresh perspective, an enthusiasm for building LiveFeed and a slightly different skill set to the project. There is no doubt that their participation will be an extremely beneficial addition to the team.

Goodness, St. Louis is steamy in August!

We're working hard and playing harder here at LiveFeed.org with occational breaks to stick our heads in the freezer.
A few exciting developments:

Our Executive Director, Kristin Dougherty, has accepted SLU's invitation to attend their law school this fall! They are very lucky to have her. Of course, we were sad that she'll have a little less time to spend with us. However, she assures us that she'll still be rocking with LiveFeed as much as humanly possible. Since we suspect she's actually Superhuman, we're now completely thrilled.

The site is coming along well! We've gotten lots of great feedback. Let us know if you see anything that would make it more understandable or useful. Up next: a spiffy gig calendar so you can see what awesome LiveFeed events are coming up and (soon) Band and Venue pages to highlight our friends and partners in feeding St. Louis.

Also, our first LiveFeed event is just about a week away and we're So Excited we can hardly stand it. Check out "Party @ the Cove" on our website for more details and come hang out with Javier Mendoza and the LiveFeed team on August 16th. We'd love to see you there.
